The Deal on TPE's
Nicole P asked:
HELP! Hey everyone! I have been emailing back and forth with my supervisor and basically he told me he can't help me with my question because he's "not familiar with the TPE's"...and yes I am serious he said that. Does anyone understand the TPE's fully? Are we supposed to have a binder for them or is it on TaskStream? Do we just use the artifacts (say a photo, lesson, etc.)...or do we need to do a write-up explaining the artifact as well? I appreciate ANY and ALL information anyone has on the TPE's. Thank you!!!

Nicole, here is what I understand. Like you said, we are supposed to gather evidence of ways we have/or will meet the TPE's. We can use lesson plans, photos, children's completed work that we assisted with, etc. All of this is supposed to be collected and organized in a portfolio. My supervisor required us to get 2 inch binders and has asked us to print out TPE dividers. All of the portfolio then goes into the binder for her to review. I am not sure if we have to do any write ups on it. Perhaps Dr. Valadez is a good resource for this question as well. From what I hear, he is supervising this semester as well.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your help! I'm hoping my supervisor just misunderstood me and thought I was asking about TPA's and that's why he said he couldn't help.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the help. I appreciate any other guidance anyone has :)
As far as I am concerned, we are all in this together. We have to help each other as much as we can!
ReplyDeleteI guess it was a big misunderstanding with my advisor...so here's some info I received:
ReplyDeleteYour handbook states that you are to keep your lesson plans in your notebook. The divider pages for your portfolio also give you clues as to what kinds of evidence can be included for each TPE. The portfolio is a collection of evidence of your Clinical Practice I and II experience as well as your lesson plans. A list of some of the possible kinds of evidence is provided. If you stuff the portfolio with too many documents then you might risk it being unwieldy and not useful.
Additional guidelines:
Purpose:
1. Use it as an information and organizing tool.
2. Your portfolio should demonstrate progress toward and competency on the required TPEs for yourself as well as your supervisor.
3. It should focus to assist you in understanding each expectation, connect the TPEs to your course work, teaching assignments during CP I and II, and to help you understand the TPEs as a continuum of practice.
4. It is a place to keep resources, products, and references from your coursework and clinical practice which, hopefully, you will find useful for the present as well as future requirements. We look for evidence when we observe you teach and your portfolio provides additional documented evidence of your practice.
5. It can also be a resource for preparing a professional portfolio and for interviews
6. It can provide opportunity for and support professional dialogue about the teaching profession as well as the TPEs.
7. The portfolio encourages the identification and gathering of evidence and data as a professional educator.
Expectations
1. You are to provide at least one artifact per TPE.
2. Artifacts can be used as evidence for more than one TPE.
3. Keep your portfolio organized, updated and available for viewing and reference as needed.
4. Portfolio notes can be handwritten. The notes should clarify the purpose of the artifact and how it applies to a particular TPE.
5. Include a one page reflection on the TPE portfolio is be provided for the university supervisor at the exit meeting.
Additional ideas for Possible Evidence
1. Staff development, and meeting agendas, outlines, and notes
2. Narratives between your and your student and parent meeting, CTs, US, etc. as you engage in meaningful conversations
3. Student samples of work or products, worksheets
Note: Many changes have taken place since then at the university and in the education department. The CSUSM's department education gives the general requirements.
Most importantly, I want you to construct a portfolio that will be useful for you in your course work, the TPAs, and provide me with clear evidence of your practice and understanding of the TPEs and their purpose toward guiding you to become the best teacher possible to meet the needs of your future students and provide them with the best learning experience possible and give them reason to want to be in your classrooms.
Last note: I imagine that you are aware that The Commission on Teacher Credentialing and the Department of Education publishes The California Standards for the Teaching Profession. This is the document that you will be introduce to as new teachers during your BTSA training in your first assignment and leads to your clear credential. The TPEs are a precursor to The California Standards for the Teaching Profession.
